Kunihiro Yamagata graduated from the University of Tsukuba, School of Medicine in 1984, and he worked as a medical fellow at the University of Tsukuba Hospital, after he joined the Department of Nephrology, Hitachi General Hospital, Hitachi, Ltd. in 1990, became a lecturer at the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Tsukuba in 1999. After studying at the University of Oregon, Institute of Molecular Biology, he became an associate professor at the Department of Nephrology, University of Tsukuba in 2002, and a professor at the Department of Nephrology, University of Tsukuba in July 2006.
He currently serves as President of the Japanese Society of Renal Rehabilitation, Director of the Japanese Society of Nephrology, and Councilor of the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine and the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy. He has been a research leader of the RPGN subcommittee of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's Research Project on Intractable Diseases for many years, and is also the principal investigator of the REACH-J study (Japanese CKDopps Study). He has published his research more than 300 papers in international journals.
