Renato C. Monteiro, MD, PhD
Professor of Immunology at Paris Cité University
Head of the Center for Research on Inflammation, INSERM U1149, Bichat Hospital, Paris.
After obtaining medical and nephrology degrees in Brazil, he moved in 1982 to Necker Hospital in France under mentoring of Prof. Jean Berger. He was awarded of the 1986 Prize from the French Society of Nephrology for identifying abnormal mesangial IgA deposits in Berger’s disease. He completed his training in immunology at the University of Birmingham at Alabama with Prof. Max Cooper where he identified the IgA Fc receptor I (CD89). He received a PhD degree in immunology in 1993. His team made important discoveries in the field of IgAN by identifying CD71 as a mesangial IgA1 receptor and the involvement of soluble CD89 in the disease. He created a mouse model of IgAN by expressing human IgA1 and CD89 which is useful for pathophysiology and pre-clinical studies.
