Dr. Maeshima graduated from Gunma University Graduate School of Medicine in 1994, where he specialized in nephrology at the Third Department of Internal Medicine. He earned his M.D. degree in 2001 and conducted basic research at the Institute for Molecular and Cellular Regulation, Gunma University. From 2003 to 2006, he conducted postdoctoral research in Dr. Sanjay Nigam's lab at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Maeshima received the prestigious Oshima Award from the Japanese Society of Nephrology in 2007. In 2018, he was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Nephrology at Jichi Medical University and has been a Professor in the Department of Nephrology and Hypertension at Saitama Medical University since 2020. His research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms of tubular regeneration and aging, identifying novel biomarkers for acute kidney injury, and exploring the role of the activin-follistatin system in the kidneys.
