Yoriaki Kaneko M.D., Ph.D., is a senior lecture in the Department of Nephrology and Rheumatology of Gunma University Graduate School of Medicine. He joined the teaching staff in March 2001. His clinical practice specializes in managing patients with renal diseases and rheumatic disorders. His research interests focus on analyzing the function of dendritic cells (DCs) and autoimmune diseases. For more than two decades, he has been studying inhibitory molecules such as SIRP α, which is abundantly expressed on macrophages and DCs, and a non-receptor tyrosine phosphatase SHP-1, which is primarily expressed in hematopoietic cells. Making use of his knowledge of flow cytometry, he has been conducting research for the past several years on immune responses influenced by ageing in the kidneys. He was a visiting scholar at Stanford University, where he studied immunology. He received his Ph.D. from Juntendo University and M.D. from Yamagata University.
