Kazuhiko Tsuruya is a Professor of the Department of Nephrology at Nara Medical University. After graduating from Kyushu University School of Medicine in 1990, he joined the Nephrology Laboratory at Kyushu University and acquired fundamental skills in clinical nephrology during his six-year clinical training at Matsuyama Red Cross Hospital. He then conducted basic research on acute kidney injury and oxidative stress, including oxidative DNA damage, at Kyushu University, where he obtained his M.D. Following this, he served as a assistant professor in the Laboratory of Nephrology at Kyushu University. In 2006, he became the laboratory chief, leading a large team over 100 nephrologists and overseeing both clinical and research activities. Since 2018, he has been a Professor of the Department of Nephrology at Nara Medical University, his current position.

His research primarily focuses on patient cohort and clinical studies aimed at generating evidence on chronic kidney disease. Notably, he has investigated brain atrophy and cognitive impairment in patients with chronic kidney disease. His findings reveal that brain atrophy progresses more rapidly in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis compared to those receiving hemodialysis and those with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease. Additionally, he has found a strong correlation between brain atrophy and frontal lobe function.
