Takai, Nami
- Nagoya Uviversity Hospital Department of Nursing
My name is Nami Takai.
I am a certified chronic disease nurse specialist and renal disease care instructor at Nagoya University Hospital in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, and am involved in the daily care of patients with chronic kidney disease.
Mainly, I operate an outpatient clinic specializing in the prevention of progression of nephropathy in patients with chronic kidney disease. I also provide information and decision-making support for patients with end-stage renal failure to help them choose future renal replacement therapy.
Japan has a rapidly aging population. It is a part of Japanese culture that in supporting elderly people in choosing renal replacement therapy, the family's will tends to take precedence over the patient's will, despite the fact that this is an important decision-making situation in the patient's life.
Today, as a board member of the Japanese Society of Renal Failure Nursing and chairperson of the International Exchange Committee, I would like to express my views on the role of nurses in supporting elderly renal failure patients to choose renal replacement therapy in Japan.
