Dr.Kashihara obtained his medical degree from Okayama University School of Medicine, Okayama, Japan, in 1982. From 1987 to 1990 he took up a research associate position in the Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, USA. He subsequently became associate professor of Department of Internal Medicine at the OUSM in 1997. In 1998 he moved to Kawasaki Medical School and became chairman of Department of Nephrology and Hypertension. He stayed in Oxford University as Visiting Fellow in 2008. He has been Vice President of Kawasaki Medical School since 2009.
He served as President of Japanese Society of Nephrology (JSN) from 2016 to 2022. He is still an executive committee member of JSN as immediate past president. He founded a non-profit organization, Japan Kidney Association (JKA) in 2016 and continues to serve as President of JKA.
His main research interest has been in pathophysiogy of kidney diseases, with particular focus on oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and the development of cardiovascular disease in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD). He is also conducting national project to develop nation-wide CKD data base (J-CKD-DB) based on electronic health records using ICT technology.
